Previously, the only midsize three-row crossover in the Lexus lineup was the RX-L. This little SUV wasn’t roomy at all for rear passengers relegated to the third-row seat. The RX-L checked a box for Lexus but didn’t actually fill the need for a roomy, three-row luxury midsize SUV. Thankfully, the new TX fills that need. This new Lexus SUV rides on the same platform as the Toyota Grand Highlander and adds the space and comfort desired.

Three powertrains for the right fit

The new 2024 Lexus TX comes in three different versions with various powertrains. The base TX350 uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that delivers 275 horsepower through an 8-speed automatic transmission. The TX350 can be had in either FWD or AWD.

The middle model is the TX500h F Sport Performance. This version has standard AWD and a hybrid-assist system that increases power over the base model to 466 horsepower. The TX500h F Sport Performance can be had with either a six or eight-speed automatic transmission.

If you want the most powerful version of the TX, you’ll go for the TX 550h+. This hybrid luxury SUV pairs a 3.5-liter V6 engine with a plug-in hybrid system to deliver 404 horsepower to the wheels via a CVT automatic transmission. This model also only comes as an AWD version, delivering this power to all four wheels.

Will you get the right level of efficiency in this SUV?

The new TX offers a range of fuel mileage numbers across the three trims with differing powertrains. The PHEV TX550h+ provides 33 miles of all-electric driving before it needs to be recharged. The base TX350 returns 21 city/27 hwy mpg in FWD models and 21 city/26 hwy mpg in AWD versions. The TX500h does a little better, providing 27 city/28 hwy mpg of fuel mileage.

How many people fit inside the TX?

The most important factor of the Lexus TX is the spacious comfort offered in the cabin. This luxury SUV fits seven people across three rows with the second-row bench seat in place. Opting for captain’s chairs lowers the total to six but improves access to the rearmost seats. Looking inside the cabin, you’ll find several storage bins and cubbies where you can store a few things that you’ll want to take out on the road.

Up front, the TX features luxury items, making it easy for you to find the right driving position thanks to the power-adjustable steering column and front seats. These front seats include heating, and the cabin can be properly illuminated with ambient interior lighting. Going for higher trims could bring comfort items, including semi-aniline leather upholstery, ventilated seats, and a heated steering wheel to the mix.

A smoother ride found in the hybrid trims

The suspension design of the Lexus TX is extremely similar to the Grand Highlander with a few changes. The TX hybrids receive adaptive shocks and rear-wheel steering, making it much easier for this large, midsize SUV to turn sharper at lower speeds. These shocks and steering systems come directly from the Lexus RX. Thanks to these improvements, the TX has less body roll and can corner better than the Grand Highlander.
