Acura’s Type S Performance Models: Celebrating a Legacy of Speed

Acura finally brought its Type S sub-brand back to the automotive market. The return of this performance name brings us thoughts of previous models.

Acura and Honda have delivered the goods for years despite the Type S name lying dormant for nearly 13 years. Honda provides the Civic Type R, which tested the waters to see if we would want a performance version of the Civic. The rabid demand for this car led us to the new version of the TLX Type S. The return of the Type S name brings back memories of previous models wearing this same name; here are some of them.

2001 Acura CL Type S

The first models to receive the Type S name were the second-generation CL coupe and TL sedan. These sporty and impressive vehicles gave us more power and performance than the standard versions of these cars. These two models use a 3.2-liter V6 engine to deliver 260 horsepower and 202 lb-ft of torque in a higher compression engine, making it easy for drives to enjoy early power delivery.

These cars used a five-speed automatic transmission at first, but eventually, the CL had a six-speed manual transmission in 2003. These cars had stiffer springs and upgraded damping rates, regardless of the chosen model. These models also had an anti-roll bar, wider tires, and Vehicle Stability Assist, which was a type of traction control.
The impressive engine and performance setup allowed the CL Type S to complete a 0-60 mph sprint in only 6.4 seconds, which was excellent for the time.

2007 Acura TL Type S

The TL sedan continued to bring Acura’s Type S performance to the market for 2007 and 2008. This new generation sedan began in 2004, but the Type S performance packaging wasn’t added until 2007. The 3.2-liter V6 engine was upgraded to 3.5-liters to give this car more power, returning 286 horsepower and 256 lb-ft of torque. This car sent power to the front wheels via either a five-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission.

This newer TL Type S added more performance to an already solid car. It came with a higher damper rate with a 400% increase in damper-mount stiffness and new solid front and thicker rear anti-roll bars.

The 2007 Acura TL Type S was one of the most fun and active cars of its time, delivering impressive driving manners and qualities that make it enjoyable at any speed.

2001 Acura Integra Type R

This model might not have worn Acura’s Type S name, but its worthy of inclusion on this list. The Integra Type R was an impressive example of driving performance and perfection on the road and track. The lightweight an impressive Integra used a fantastic 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivered 197 horsepower to the wheels. This was good enough to enable this car to hit 60 mph in only 6.0 seconds.

The Integra Type R felt more like a sporty motorcycle than a four-wheeled car. The impressive five-speed manual transmission and deft steering make this car a fantastic ride. Acura sets this car up with FWD, which allows it to slide right and provide you with gleeful fun on any track. This is easily one of the most satisfying compact sports cars ever made and is easy to toss around when you’re behind the wheel.

2007 Acura RSX Type S

Here, we have one of Acura’s Type S models that truly looks and feels like a sports car before you ever take off in this amazing machine. The RSX uses a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that delivers a good punch in a lightweight sports car. While not quite as aggressive as the Integra Type R, this version of the RSX is made to take on the track and deliver an incredible performance.

The steering is heavier than the Integra, which could be exactly what many drivers want when they turn the wheel. The strong braking adds a bit more control and confidence on any road. This means the Acura RSX Type S gives you the engaged feeling you’re looking for when you drive this car hard and fast. It’s easy to have a lot of fun from behind the wheel of this Acura.
