2025 Ford Ranger Raptor vs. Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

Which midsize off-road-focused truck is right for you? The 2025 Ford Ranger Raptor and Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro are two of the best options avaiable to you.

Both names strike fear in the hearts of regular trucks. The Raptor reminds you of a hunting dinosaur from Jurassic Park that had no qualms about killing everything in its path, while the TRD Pro name has been a longstanding leader in the off-road pickup truck world.

Should you drive the 2025 Ford Ranger Raptor or the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro?

Neither is a bad choice

It would be irresponsible to say outright that one of these trucks isn’t capable of getting the job done. When you want a desert-running machine with amazing off-road gear, these trucks are excellent options, giving you the credentials and qualities desired for some serious fun on the trails, in the mud, and across the desert sand. Still, picking a vehicle can be difficult for some drivers, and you want to have the truck that meets all your needs.

Check out those powertrains

With any vehicle comparison, one of the first places to look for differences is under the hood. That’s certainly the case with these two pickups. The Ford Ranger Raptor is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. This setup produces 405 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque.

The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro takes a different approach and is the only hybrid pickup in the midsize truck market. This high-end off-roader has a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine and a hybrid motor sandwiched between the engine and the 8-speed automatic transmission. The total output is 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque.

The Tacoma TRD Pro has more torque than the Ranger Raptor, but the Ford pickup has a lot more horsepower.

Going inside for comfort and security

Both trucks use a crew cab setup, giving you four full-sized doors and room for up to five passengers. The Toyota has wide, comfortable front seats and generous interior storage space. The hybrid battery takes up some space under the rear seat, but that’s hardly worth mentioning. There’s room for 14 drinks, which might be a little overkill, but the nonslip phone surfaces and large door pockets make it easy to carry what you need.

Ford offers flashier seats in the Ranger Raptor and provides drivers with two gloveboxes along with several small slots and cubbies in the center console for storing items. The red-and-black seat combination keeps your attention, offering the sporty styling you want in a focused truck. Despite the style, the Ranger’s seats lacked the support offered in the Toyota pickup.

Which truck has you covered during the week?

Unless you have a very special job or lifestyle, you won’t spend all of your time in the wilderness. That means you need your truck to do truck stuff. The Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro can tow 6,000 pounds compared to 5,510 for the Ford Ranger Raptor. The Tacoma also has a higher payload capacity at 1,680 pounds. That said, the Ranger has a bed that’s wide enough to hold a sheet of plywood flat across the back, but the Tacoma has a composite bed and a clever rail-and-cleat system that’s part of the standard package.

Which truck is better on the trails?

For desert-running fun, the Ranger Raptor tops the charts. This incredible truck can rocket across the desert floor and deliver the high-performance, high-powered drive that you want to experience in a Baja-inspired pickup truck. The Tacoma TRD Pro pales in comparison when riding over the desert floor, showing stiffness in the front that makes it much harder to handle than the Ranger.

The slow-speed off-road driving comparison shows a slightly different image. The Ranger is plodding and almost seems to pout about not being pushed hard across a desert floor, while the Tacoma handles rough and slow trails easily. That said, it would be nice if the off-road modes meant that Toyota’s Safety Sense features were turned off, otherwise a shadow might keep you from getting through a tough spot.

Which truck is the better choice?

The Ford Ranger Raptor and Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro both handle the daily driving duties well, giving you well-rounded trucks that can be used for work and play. When it comes to real off-road fun, the Ranger Raptor stands tall as the better choice. It has tons of off-road goodies and is more affordable than the top-end Tacoma, making it an obvious winner. That said, there’s no way you can go wrong with either truck.
