Kia EV4 Poised to Shake Up the U.S. EV Market
The market is starved for entry-level EVs, but the new 2026 Kia EV4 is ready to shake things up and make EVs affordable again.
Slated for a U.S. debut soon, the Kia EV4 combines competitive range options, Tesla NACS fast-charging compatibility, and a tech-rich interior with a 30-inch “Navigation Cockpit” display. With an estimated starting price around $37,000, it’s positioned to offer an appealing alternative to higher-priced rivals like the Tesla Model 3. This new EV could be the revolutionary model that makes it easy to enjoy an affordable choice when it’s time for a drive.
A look only a mother could love
The somewhat snarky statement made about babies or children when they aren’t very attractive is “a face only a mother could love.” Hopefully, this is something you’ve only ever heard in jest or during a little self-deprecation. The new EV4 is a small electric sedan that has a package that isn’t exactly as stylish or admirable as many other new models. Some people might like the way it looks, but the unusual style of the Kia might not be appealing to most. Generally, this is described as a polarizing style, but it’s hard to imagine who would be on the side of this strange-looking EV.
A modest powertrain befitting the price
The new Kia EV4 makes use of a modest power train with one electric motor driving the front wheels while sending 201 horsepower to those wheels. Eventually, a dual-motor version is expected, but an announced date for that hasn’t been set. The EV4 isn’t a fast vehicle, posting a 0-60 MPH time of nearly 7.5 seconds, but that is enough quickness to get this little car out in front of traffic or accelerate on a highway entry ramp with ease.
Acceleration is achieved thanks to the torque level, which reaches 209 lb-ft. This punch is excellent and without hesitation, despite not reaching highway speeds very quickly. The EV4 is willing to dart in and out of traffic, making it easy to find your way to the front of the pack.
Overall, this little Kia electric car is refined and enjoyable, providing a comfortable and quiet personality on any road. Despite being a quiet vehicle, Kia gave the EV4 plenty of insulation to keep road noises outside, where they belong, ensuring you have a calm and quiet ride wherever you want to go.
How far can you drive?
Kia will offer the EV4 with two battery packs, giving you different driving ranges. The 58-kWh pack is good enough for a driving range of 235 miles, while the 81-kWh battery pack can provide you with up to 330 miles of driving range. The long-range model can charge from 10 to 80 percent in 31 minutes, while the smaller battery does the same in 29 minutes. In the world of EVs, this is becoming relatively standard, making it easy to stop for some juice and only wait about half an hour to continue your road trip.
Is it a hatchback?
The new Kia EV4 is a low-slung four-door sedan with an airy interior bringing in an abundance of light and a minimalistic dashboard design. Going inside, you’ll find more room than in the Kia K4 compact sedan, which makes this electric model more comfortable and right for a relaxing ride to wherever you need to go. There are pop-up leg rests for the front seats, which means you can lounge while the car charges at a public charging station. Set the mood lighting to your desired setting and enjoy the calm and peaceful feeling of a comfortable little car.
Thankfully, the EV4 is much more attractive on the inside than the outside. That said, the controls are no longer redundant, which means you must find the controls you need on the screens and won’t have buttons and dials for what you want to change and adjust during your time behind the wheel.
If there is a problem in the cabin, you will find that the cabin feels more cramped than a typical compact sedan. This happens thanks to the combination of a high floor and a low roof, which makes the area feel smaller than it should.
Excellent infotainment and connectivity
Two-thirds of the width of the Kia EV4 is comprised of a 30-inch glass panel that houses a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a 5.0-inch touch panel for climate controls. You can access the vehicle using a digital key via your smartphone and Apple Watch apps. This infotainment system is capable of over-the-air updates, making it easy to enjoy new tech and information that’s updated while you own the vehicle. Your musical choices can be played over the eight-speaker infotainment system, but you might want to upgrade to a Harman Kardon audio system.
Does the new EV4 appeal to you?
The new Kia EV4 might truly appeal to many drivers because of its price. With the end of the Federal EV Tax Credit in September, the EV4 will easily be one of the most affordable electric vehicles, as long as it doesn’t get hit hard by tariffs. This could be the electric car that gives you enough driving range for your daily commute over the course of several days. Will you choose the EV4 and let it be the electric car that’s right for you?
