The Cadillac Escalade is a striking symbol of luxury in the full-size luxury SUV segment. Now, a new large luxury SUV hits the road at your Jeep dealer.
Using an old nameplate, the Grand Wagoneer is all-new and packed to the brim with luxury features. It’s also impressively large. Let’s take a closer look.
There’s little doubt that the Cadillac Escalade and the Grand Wagoneer are direct rivals. Compare the Series III 4X4 trim of the Grand Wagoneer with the Escalade 4WD Sport Platinum trim, and you have two SUVs that hit right around $110,000 in price. Both feature naturally aspirated V8 engines and both have 4WD.
Both SUVs also deliver three rows of seating, premium audio systems, leather and wood interior detailing, and a bold exterior that stands out. These are arguably the most luxurious American SUVs on the market right now.
Comparing the powertrains, the Escalade makes 420 horsepower with its 6.2-liter V8 engine as paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Grand Wagoneer has a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 beneath its hood, and that’s good enough for 471 horsepower. Unsurprisingly, this gives the Grand Wagoneer a bit of a muscle car feel and it revs with admirable growl.
Ride and Comfort
The two SUVs start to take different routes in this category. The Cadillac Escalade Sport Platinum trim is tuned for a stiffer ride, which gives it the edge in handling, sharp steering, and excellent body control for such a large SUV. However, this also gives the Escalade a stiffer and more jarring ride over rough roads. If you leave the smooth pavement, you’ll definitely feel it in the Escalade.
On the other hand, the Grand Wagoneer is luxuriously comfy in every area. The steering is smooth and even feels over-boosted. The suspension is supple, easily absorbing rough roads and dissipating any jolts and jars before they ever reach the passengers. Sporty is always fun, but for this price point and with the goal of a lounge on wheels, the Grand Wagoneer takes the cake. A test drive of the Grand Wagoneer at your Jeep dealer will quickly convince you of that.
Speaking of a lounge on wheels, these two SUVs present extremely posh cabins. Let’s start with the Escalade’s striking infotainment screen setup. It features high-resolution graphics and well-organized menus. The cabin is full of leather, shiny metal, and wood throughout the interior. There are still some low-quality plastic pieces scattered here and there, which wouldn’t be a big deal if it weren’t for the fact that the Grand Wagoneer goes all out.
The Grand Wagoneer’s cabin is fully lined in top-quality materials, including wood, soft leather, and bits of shiny chrome. The controls are unique and look specifically designed for this SUV. In the Escalade, some of the luxury is muted in the rear part of the cabin, but in the Grand Wagoneer, the luxury feel extends from front to back. The third row is even spacious enough for three adults.
Despite the Cadillac Escalade’s well-deserved reputation as the standout American luxury SUV, the Grand Wagoneer has eclipsed it in the most important areas. We definitely recommend visiting your Jeep dealer to see it in person.
